Magnolia

Modernizing a cooperative's power portfolio with efficient, long-term generation

Case Study

Problem

The members of the 1803 Electric Cooperative had contracts with generation that were expiring in 2025. The portfolio of assets they were contracted with contained coal and other less efficient generation. 1803 was looking to modernize their portfolio, reduce the exposure to coal and carbon emissions, and provide cost predictability for their members.

Solution

The Magnolia Power plant was developed by Kindle to address the specific needs of the coop members. Magnolia is the most efficient generator in MISO-South – which requires less fuel for every kiloWatt of energy produced.

Magnolia

Magnolia Power is located in a critical reliability area for Louisiana. In addition to the benefits provided to the 1803 members, Magnolia provides power inside a constrained location on the Louisiana grid allowing for greater benefits to all Louisiana customers by reducing congestion on the system.

Outcomes:

Mitigates fuel price exposure by using less fuel.

Longterm price predictability over the 20 year contract term.

Efficiency helps mitigate cost for existing Louisiana ratepayers.
